An elderly Japanese woman has been scammed of her life savings after being caught up in a romance scam.

The 80-year-old woman from Hokkaido, Japan, was scammed out of approximately 1 million yen (around $6,700 or £5,000) by a fraudster posing as an astronaut.

It all started in July 2025 when the woman, who lives alone, connected with the scammer through a social media platform.

According to reports, the fraudster claimed to be an astronaut stranded in space. He went on to initiate a romantic connection with her over weeks of messaging.

He later told her his spaceship was “under attack” and he needed money to buy oxygen to in order for him to survive.

He was able to convince the old woman her to send the funds through electronic payments at multiple convenience stores.

The woman, emotionally manipulated and believing the story, transferred the money, which was described as her life savings in some reports.

After discussing the situation with her family, the woman realized she had been scammed and reported to the Hokkaido police.

According to police report, the case of the woman is part of a romance scam that has been targeting vulnerable elderly individuals.

Authorities noted that Japan’s aging population, the second-oldest globally after Monaco, makes seniors frequent targets for such frauds.

Police urged people to be suspicious of online contacts requesting money and to report such cases immediately.
