In September 2024, Routh was arrested after a Secret Service agent spotted him aiming his rifle at the agent and the then-presidential candidate.
The agent opened fire, causing him to drop his weapon and flee the scene. A witness recounted seeing him running across the road and entering his car.

Ryan faced five charges including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, as well as charges relating to firearms possession.
He represented himself during the trial. In his closing statement, Ryan argued that there was no intent to kill because the trigger was never pulled, the gun was not fired and nobody got hurt.
