The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted James Comey, former FBI director, on two federal charges: making false statements and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, announced that a federal grand jury has returned an indictment charging the former FBI Director.

“The charges as alleged in this case represent a breach of the public trust at an extraordinary level,” Halligan added.

The charges arise from Comey’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on September 30, 2020.

Prosecutors allege that during this testimony, Comey falsely stated that he had never authorized anyone at the FBI to act as an anonymous source for the media regarding specific investigations.

They also say he obstructed Congress by misleading the oversight process.

In a post on his Truth Social, President Trump expressed his joy as he claimed James is “One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to.”

“He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation,” he added.

If convicted, Comey faces as much as 5 years in prison. However, actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.

An indictment is merely an accusation, Comey is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
