UDS wins FISU University World Cup Football by beating defending Champions, Paulista University from Brazil.

Ghana’s University of Development Studies, UDS, situated in the Northern Part, Tamale, has reached a historic feat in the University World Cup Football for the first time in its history in Dalian, China.

UDS, who went into the FISU University World Cup Football as underdogs, have written their name in gold, and it will never be erased from the University Championship after completing an unbeaten run and winning the ultimate.

The Ghanaian side played a total of six matches: three group stage matches, one semi-final, one quarter-final, and the final match.
They started the tournament with a slim win against a UAE side, University of Sharjah, with the help of Ezedeen Alhasan and his colleague to win their team the 3 points on September 18, 2025.

UDS’s match day 2 was against Ramon Llull University of Spain, on September 20, 2025, and to the world’s surprise, the Tamale boys whipped the Spaniards convincingly 4-1, of which Alhassan Zakaria scored a brace, 1 great goal, and a powerful free kick. These second results took them to the top of the group.

Day 3 of the tournament was a solid game between Paulista University from Brazil, where football is made. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, which means the Ghana boys bagged 7 points from the group stages on September 22, 2025.

The Quarter finals were set between Kyungil University from South Korea, 5-2. Augustine Frimpong scored a Hat-trick and Alhassan Zakaria sealed the game with a brace on September 24, 2025. The Korean boys managed to pull back only 2, and obviously, that wasn’t enough to see them through to the next round of the tournament.

The University of Granada was the University of Development Studies’ opponent in the Semis. The side held UDS to a goalless draw, but they ultimately lost 5-4 on penalties after Emmanuel Edo of UDS made two crucial saves to keep his school team alive on September 26, 2025.

On Sunday, September 28, 2025, Coach Shaibu Ibrahim Tanko and his boys dethroned the defending champions, Paulista University of Brazil, when they met in the finals, which ended 2-1, thanks to the goal scored from a direct corner kick.
