In a society where wealth is a measure of respect and standard, it rare to see the rich engaging some activities even for the fun of it.

A Japanese millionaire has changed the narrative by working for the minimum pay even though he has millions sitting in his account.

Koichi Matsubara, a 56-year-old Tokyo resident, is making headlines over the globe for his humble feat and minimal living

He earns over 30 million yen (US$203,000) annually from rental properties and investments but chooses to work as a janitor in a Tokyo apartment complex.

Every week, he cleans public areas and handles small maintenance tasks three days a week, about four hours per day.

His modest four-hour shifts, three days a week, brings in only 100,000 yen ($680) monthly — far below Tokyo’s average salary.

When asked why he continues this work, Matsubara reportedly says it’s not about the money as loves doing it.

According to him, he does it “to stay active, healthy, and mentally sharp.” He views routine chores as meaningful and mere duty.

Matsubara saved diligently after working in a factory. Using around three million yen ($20,000) from his early savings, he bought his first studio flat when the market bottomed out.

Over time, he paid off loans, scaled up holdings, and diversified into stocks and funds. He also owns seven rental flats in Tokyo and surrounding areas.

Regardless of his wealth, Matsubara still cooks at home, cycles instead of driving, uses a basic phone and holds onto clothes for years.
