Debt Restructuring was a Necessary Evil – Former Deputy Finance Minister, Stephen Amoah

The Former Deputy Finance Minister and member of Parliament for Nhyiaeso Constituency, Ashanti Region, has described the Debt Restructuring by the previous government as bad but needed to save Ghana’s economy.

The member of Parliament, during an interview with a Kumasi-based radio, Oyerapa FM, stressed that all the people who were affected by the government’s decision had every right to complain and criticise them, but elites, who know that was Ghana’s last resort due to many factors, but in the name of politics, they all act ignorantly.

Bond Holders, Commercial Banks, pensioners and retirees, and other Financial Companies were all affected, but the group that had public sympathy the most is the Pensioners and Retirees.

They worked all their lives and saved some money to enjoy in their old age and use some to pay for their hospital bills, but the government took it all and informed them it would be paid not soon but later.

The former Civil servants once picketed the Ministry of Finance, headed by Ken Ofori-Atta (2017-2024) under the Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration, to retrieve their money, but that was to no avail.

One of the most popular victims of the DDEP is Michael Blackson, an American-Ghanaian Comedian who once campaigned for NPP. He claimed to have lost $1 million to the Debt Restruction.

Honorable Stephan Amoah described the situation the past government put the bondholders and companies through as a bad one due to some decisions that were taken in the past, but it was necessary to keep Ghana’s Economy from shambles.

He also said they deserved to lose the 2024 Election and every criticism, but people with economic knowledge in the New Patriotic Party, NPP, should avoid using that situation to campaign as the party head to the polls to choose a Presidential candidate, because that won’t be fair.
