The High Court of Ghana granted Benard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, bail of 15 million Ghana Cedis, but the Attorney General, Dominic Ayine, pressed new Criminal charges against him.
The charges against Chairman Wontumi are Akonta Mining’s involvement in mining in the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve in 2022 (Three counts), Felling of Trees without written Authority (Two Counts), and Erecting Buildings in Forest Reserves without written Authority (Two Counts).
According to Reports, Wontumi was re-arrested after the court proceedings regarding his invitation to the Criminal Investigational Department.
Wontumi’s Akonta Mining is the reason why he is spending a night or 2 in Police Custody.
People think the harsh treatment of Wontumi in the past months was a Political witch hunt, even though there is clear evidence of Benard Antwi Boasiako’s company engaging in illegal mining.

In a dramatic scene, Wontumi was exiting the Court in handcuffs and being escorted by CID officials.
He didn’t speak to the media but did his regular gesture by kissing his free hand (right) and pointing it to his sympathizers.
This illegality reportedly led 4o excavators to destroy 13 hectares of land.
