The Football Giants of Africa, Ghana Black Stars, are on the verge of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, but there’s a little problem.
Ghana has participated in four of the last 5 World Cups, missing only Russia 2018.

The Black Stars featured in Germany 2006, where Ghana finished second behind Italy and ahead of the Czech Republic and the USA. Ghana reached the Round of 16 in their First World Cup Appearance after losing 3-0 to Brazil. It ended tragically, but was very impressive as a debut.
Ghana made it to South Africa 2010, making its second appearance, and finished second behind Germany and ahead of Australia and Serbia, and beat the USA in the Round of 16.
The 2010 World Cup Quarter-final at Soccer City, Johannesburg, will forever be the most traumatic match for Ghana after Uruguay’s Luis Suarez used his hand to stop a ball that would’ve sealed Ghana’s victory and also become the first African Country to reach the semi-finals of the Tournament. A penalty was given as Asamoah Gyan missed it. Ghana lost 4-2 on penalties.
Ghana made it to the Brazil 2014, where they finished 4th for the first time in the group stages behind Portugal, the USA, and Germany. The Stars exited the tournament sadly.
Ghana could not make it to the 2018 World Cup due to poor performance in the qualifiers.
In 2022, Ghana made it to the World Cup but finished poorly by exiting the tournament after finishing 4th in the group with Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.
Ghana has a chance to appear at the World Cup 2026 after winning 7 of the 9 World Cup Qualifiers, drawing 1, and losing. The comfortable sit on top of Group I with 22 Points, scoring 22 goals and conceding only 6 goals. The Player with the most goal contributions in the African qualifiers is Jordan Ayew with seven goals and seven assists.
What stops Ghana from participating in the 2026 World Cup is losing to Comoros at home, which would be a total upset, and Madagascar, which is second in the group with 19 points, beating Mali, who is third with 15 points, by 7 goals to nil.
