The Foreign Affairs Minister of Ghana, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has expressed his displeasure regarding the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) plan to deport a former gang member, Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Sources indicate that Garcia was one of the victims of President Donald Trump’s Mass Deportation to clear the system. Gracia was sent to his country, El Salvador, when he fled years ago to avoid gang clashes in 2011 at age 16.
He said to be a member of the MS-13 Gang, one of the most dangerous in Los Angeles, America, since 1980, established by El Salvadorians, and their deadly rivals are the 18th Street Gang. The MS-13 Gang deals in all sorts of illegalities and engages in clashes that cost the lives of many members and non-members.
The US Government paid the El Salvador government to keep Garcia in Prison, but his wife filed a suit against the US government to get her husband back.
Abrego was detained in the Tennessee for conspiracy to smuggle people into the US in June 2025 after he returned. In August 2025, Immigration and Customs Enforcement conducted a check-in in Maryland.
With this track record, the US government’s plan to deport such an individual to Ghana has been firmly rejected by Ghana’s Foreign Minister, citing that this is against Ghana’s Humanitarian principles.
