A Member of Parliament has raised a concern about Ghana not having a substantive Defense Minister after the tragic helicopter crash that claimed eight persons, including the then Defense Minister, Dr. Omane Boamah.

One Wednesday, on August 6, 2025, A Ghana Air Force Harbin Z-9 helicopter crashed into a forested mountainside in the Adansi Akrofuom District, Ashanti Region.

The tragic incident claimed the lives of all eight occupants

According to the Lawmaker for the people of Assin South, the Central Region has raised concerns about how the John Mahama administration has decided not to appoint a new person to occupy that office because it plays a key role in Ghana’s security.

The Defense Minister leads the civilian ministry of defense, provides a framework for the Police, and provides resources for the armed forces to protect the country from internal threats like conspiracy to execute a coup or treason, and external attacks from terrorists.

The Ranking Member of the Defense and the Interior committee has criticized the government for neglecting the Defense Ministry, which puts the country in danger.

He says the government is gambliing with the security and stability in Ghana and has urged President John Mahama to appoint a suitbale person to fit the shoes of Dr. Omane Boamah as soon as possible to protect the country because for 3 months now the illegal mining, Galamsey is still thriving while the people of Gbenyiri, Sampa and Bawku have fleed their homes due to tribal conflict and all this is going on because there’s no defence minister to address ther problems and provide solutions.
