President Samia runs unopposed in Tanzania election, Opposition Candidates disqualified or jailed

Tanzania heads to the polls to elect a new President today, October 29, 2025.

The President of Tanzania, Her Excellency Samia Saluhu Hassan, has reportedly jailed prominent members of her direct opponents, and some candidates have been disqualified.

Her actions depict how she wants to be perpetual with power, as the people of Tanzania are getting fed up because they thought Samia would not be power drunk like African leaders who are men.

  • Senior member of Chadema Party, Tundu Lissu, was arrested in April 2025 and is currently serving a jail term for plans to commit treason. This action is an attempt to crack down on the opposition.
  • The Deputy chair of the Chadema Party, John Heche, was arrested at a Dar es Salaam court during the treason trial of Tundu on October 22, 2025, as the government claimed he left the country illegally.
  • Joseph Mbilinyi is also another member of Chadema Party who was arrested on August 12, 2024, during a banned rally marking International Youth Day, and over 500 youth at the event were detained.
  • The General Secretary of the Chadema Party, John Mnyika, was arrested on August 12, 2024. He was part of the 500 who were arrested.
  • Alliance for Change and Transformation-Wazalendo (ACT-Wazalendo), Presidential candidate, Luhaga Mpina, has not been arrested but has been disqualified by the Tanzania Electoral Authorities, with AP News suggesting he faces some legal or political impediments that may involve detention ot house arrest, even though the specific details of his arrest are unknown.

The Race is a one-man show, as people in Tanzania suggest she should not waste resources on a poll she will definitely win.
