One of the key factors why the National Democratic Congress, NDC, won the 2024 general election in Ghana was its promise to hold former government officials accountable for their time in public offices.
Politicians have made a lot of promises they never fulfil, but Ghanaians decided to give this government a try to see if they would finally get the accountability and transparency about government spending.

Right after the New Patriotic Party, led by Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, lost the elections, the former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, reportedly left the country to seek medical attention in the United States of America.
Ken Ofori-Atta served as the Minister of Finance of Ghana from January 7, 2024, to February 24, 2024.
During his time, Ghanaโs economy rose to a great level of appreciation, but it declined after the exchange rate depreciated to the extent that 80 members of Parliament in the New Patriotic Party staged a protest against him and pleaded with the government to sack him because he was making the government unpopular.

Ghanaians made a deal with the new government to get Ken Ofori-Atta to account for some spending he made during his time as Finance Minister. Unfortunately, all efforts have yielded no results as he refuses to return to Ghana.
In early 2025, the Office of The Special Prosecutor, led by Kissi Agyebeng, placed Ken on their โWanted Listโ but was removed on February 18, after he pledged to return voluntarily.

The Interpol placed a red notice on his head in June 2025, but he failed to appear before them for questioning after he claimed to have been battling Prostate Cancer.
The hunt to bring the former government official home for questioning continues, as the United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement has apprehended and detained him in Virginia concerning his stay, which exceeded his permit.
Ghanaians are now questioning the efficiency of the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL), an initiative to recover all money taken from the state coffers and bring accountability to the people as they struggle to bring the former government official to account.

ICE has stated that he is medically fit to remain in detention, as they work on his matter, and this means he had no evidence to back his claim of being unfit as an excuse not to return to Ghana for the past 1 year.
Ghanaian Embassy officials in the USA got the permission to speak to Ken, but he denied them the access for any conversation.
