Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of the late Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi, has been shot and killed at his home in Libya.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, February 3, when the 53-year-old was shot dead by unknown assailants at his home in the western town of Zintan.

According to reports from Gaddafi’s political team and Libyan officials, four masked gunmen stormed his residence inside Zintan which is about 136 kilometres from Tripoli.

Police and local media also reported that security cameras of the house had been disabled before the attack.

Security cameras were reportedly disabled before the attack, Libyan media and the political team said.

Saif al-Islam’s death was confirmed by his lawyer, Khaled al-Zaidi, and his political adviser, Abdullah Othman Abdurrahim.

He was killed around 2:30 a.m. local time from multiple gunshot wounds, as confirmed by forensic experts from the Libyan attorney general’s office.

Libya’s Attorney General’s office said investigators have launched a formal probe into the shooting.

Born on June 25, 1972, Saif al-Islam was the second-eldest son of Muammar Gaddafi and his second wife, Safia Farkash.

He studied engineering and diplomacy, including at the London School of Economics, and was once seen as his father’s heir apparent.

Gaddafi’s office described the killing as a “cowardly and treacherous assassination,” highlighting the brazen nature of the attack.
