The university cited “unforeseen circumstances” on its website, but Ghana’s Embassy in Washington, D.C., has linked the last-minute decision to backlash over President Mahama’s perceived support for Ghana’s controversial Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, widely described as anti-LGBTQ+.

The event was intended to honour Mahama for his “global leadership, commitment to democratic governance, and advocacy for reparative justice.”

Lincoln University had publicly announced the honour on March 19, highlighting Mahama’s role as the African Union’s Champion for Advancing the Cause of Justice and the Payment of Reparations.

In a strongly worded statement issued on March 24, the Ghana Embassy expressed disappointment, stating that preparations for the visit had been completed after extensive engagements.
