The Gbese District Court in Accra has made a significant ruling today by discharging Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, along with his two co-accused in connection with serious allegations.

The court’s decision came after proceedings that involved charges related to cyber offenses, money laundering, and an alleged large-scale fraud scheme.

The case centers on accusations that the trio was involved in an alleged $8 million romance scam that primarily targeted elderly victims in the United States.

United States authorities had previously indicted Frederick Kumi on charges including conspiracy to commit wire fraud and money laundering, which carry potential sentences of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Ghanaian agencies, including those handling cybercrime enforcement, arrested him and the others following cooperation linked to the U.S. extradition request.

Lawyer Oliver Barker-Vormawor, who represented Abu Trica, publicly announced the discharge through social media posts shortly after the hearing concluded.

He detailed that the court ordered the release of all three individuals from the immediate charges being pursued locally.

However, the courtroom scene turned tense immediately after the judge’s decision. Officers from NACOC (the Narcotics Control Commission, which has been involved in aspects of the enforcement) attempted to re-arrest the discharged individuals right inside the courtroom premises.

Such an action directly challenged the authority of the court’s order and created a dramatic confrontation in the session.

The presiding judge expressed clear and strong displeasure over this attempted intervention, highlighting concerns about respect for judicial rulings.

While the discharge applies to Abu Trica and his two co-accused in the current local proceedings, the matter is far from fully resolved.

The court has adjourned further aspects of the case involving Frederick Kumi specifically to February 3, 2026, indicating that additional hearings or decisions are still pending.

The U.S. extradition request remains active although earlier court sessions, including one in mid-January 2026, had set dates like February 7 for rulings on discharge or extradition elements.
