The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, has warned persons who deal in online fraud to desist from that unscrupulous act or face the wrath of the law.
For the past 5 months, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has been in Ghana arresting people who have been engaging in online fraudulent activities, which leave victims devastated.
Romance scam has been in existence for many years, and boys who engage in this bad act are called “Game boys” and they’re called “yahoo boys” in Nigeria.
People who engage in romance scams are mostly old, rich, white folks. Men act like women to take money from old white men, and they sometimes act like they’re in love with old white men to take money from them.
On June 18, 2025, the FBI launched an attack on a Ghanaian Cybercrime ring and arrested kingpins for amassing $100 million over the past 15 years from fraudulent activities such as business email compromise and romance scams, following a 2023 Southern District of New York investigation.
The individuals were Isaac Oduro Boatend, also known as Kofi Boat, Inusah Ahmed Derrick Van Yeboah, and Patrick Kwame Asare.
The USA indicates that victims of Romance Scams lost $1.3 billion to fraudsters.

The extradition of the 3 Ghanaians has tarnished Ghana’s image to some extent, and so the President is making efforts to stop this bad act from ruining the country’s good image.
It was reported on June 5, 2025, that one “tech queen,” Sapphire Egemasi of Nigeria, was engaged in a multimillion-dollar fraudulent act and was awaiting trial at Lexington, Kentucky, in the USA, as she could be serving a 20-year jail term.
Romance Scams and other fraudulent acts are carried out by people who are highly skilled with computers, hacking accounts, and faking identities.
