Early life and education

Elizabeth Ohene was born in Abutia, Volta region of Ghana on 24th January ,1945. She was a student of Mawuli Senior High in Ho and had been admitted to University of Ghana in 1964. She graduated with B.A. (Hon.) degree in English. She obtained a mass communication certificate from University of India.


Elizabeth Ohene is a journalist and became the first woman in Africa to be an editor in a national daily news paper. She was appointed as the Minister of Education, Science and Sports during former President Kuffuor’s administration.

The award winning journalist lived in the UK for 19 years. Whilst in London, she published a weekly magazine called “talking drum”. The purpose of her magazine was to have a platform to expose the human rights abuses in Ghana.
