The African Union (AU) has announced that it is suspending Madagascar’s membership as part of the union.
This comes after a week of protests and impeachments by young people who call themselves “Gen Z Madagascar.”

According to a statement from the country’s militia, Colonel Michael Randrianirina is set to take the oath on Friday, October 17, in front of the High Constitutional Court.
He’ll step in as head of what’s being called the “Refoundation of the Republic of Madagascar,” promising a transitional setup with a military-led committee for up to two years before fresh elections roll around.

Randrianirina is a commander from the elite CAPSAT unit. The unit ousted the president into power back in 2009. He broke ranks last week and told troops to stand down against demonstrators.
It all started as frustration over blackouts, water shortages, high levels of unemployment, and corruption.

Labor unions and civic groups piled on. On Tuesday October 8, parliament impeached President Andry Rajoelina who bolted the country on Sunday via a French military flight.
On Wednesday, AU announced Madagascar’s suspension from the 55-nation bloc “with immediate effect.” The suspension by the AU could mean frozen aid and diplomatic isolation.
