Ghanaian MP dies today after short illness

Mahama Naser Toure, the Member of Parliament for Ayawaso East, has died at age 60 following a short illness.

Mahama passed away on 4 January 2026 at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after receiving treatment for his ailment.

His death has been confirmed close relations, government officials and major news outlets in Ghana.

Toure was a fourth-term MP representing the Ayawaso East Constituency on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

First elected in 2012, he won re-election most recently in the 2024 general election, securing a strong mandate from constituents in the Greater Accra Region. 

During his time in Parliament, Toure served in several key leadership roles. He was Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee.

He was also a member of the Roads and Transport Committee, House Committee, and the Private Membersโ€™ Bills and Motions Committee.

The Parliament of Ghana is expected to issue an official statement and observe a period of mourning as arrangements for his funeral continue.

According to reports, Toure is expected to be laid to rest today as is demanded by Muslim laws and traditions.
