The 2020/2021 seasons is mathematically over with Club football and international tournaments already completed and no doubt the main attention now has been shifted to the most prestigious football awards in football, The Ballon D’or.

The deadly COVID-19 pandemic forced France Football to cancel the award last year and football’s biggest stars enter 2021 more determined than ever to lay their hands on the Individual gong.

The race is really getting hotter as of July 2021 and even though we still have some months till December, here are the top ten performers and favorites to lift the Ballon D’or.

10) Erling Haaland (Borussia Dortmund / Norway)

Erling Haland is only 20 but already established himself as one of a defenders nightmare. He scored 20 goals and provided 6 assists in his Bundesliga season but couldn’t help them overcome the powers of Bayern Munich.

9) Federico Chiesa (Juventus / Italy)

Chiesa !!! ohhh my Chiesa, What a joy to watch, the youngster is arguably Juventus’ best performer of the season even though he found the back of the net only 9 times but most of them came at a crucial moment.

He still has a lot left in his tank and went into the European championship with full force and was the name on everyone’s lips when Italy dumped Spain out of the competition they went on to win.

8) Kylian Mbappe (Paris Saint-Germain / France)

Does the PSG forward need any introduction? Definitely no, mot only is he a goal machine at 20, his tremendous pace and quick decision making ability in the box is the reason he is considered second to only Ronaldo and Messi currently.

He scored 27 League goals but couldn’t stop Lille from clinching a historic Ligue 1 victory and his Disappointing Euro outing is the reason he ranks as far as 8 in the Ballon D’or Ranking.

7) Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City / Belgium)

De Bruyne only managed 6 goals and 12 assists in the 2020/2021 English Premier League for Manchester City out of 25 outings but hey his General play which helps the Citizens to another League victory and a champions League final.

Just as Modric in 2018, it will have been a strong case for the Midfielder if he was able to win the UCL and send Belgium a little more than the Quater Finals of the Euro 2020.

6) Cristiano Ronaldo (Juventus / Portugal)

Cristiano Ronaldo has had a very difficult season with Juventus and that’s because of the standard the Portuguese man set for himself throughout his professional career.

He was still able to score 29 goals, the highest in the 2020/2021 Serie Season and took that same energy to the European Championship where he also won the golden boot with 5 goals despite a R16 exit from the competition.

This achievements are strong cases for Ronaldo’s individual performance in the Ballon D’or race but no league title and an early exit from the UCL is what cast doubts on his 6th Ballon D’or.

5) Jorginho (Chelsea / Italy)

The Italian Midfielder is a whole vibe in the middle of the park, his ability to break play and give out unexpected passes is one of the secret weapons Chelsea has been using to weaken opponents.

He played a Vital part in Italy’s Euro success. He is a Champions league and Euro winner therefore Joghino is not one to sleep on when it comes to favorites for the Ballon D’or.

4) Romelu Lukaku (Inter Milan / Belgium)

Lukaku Scored 24 goals in Serie A this season to help Inter Millan end Juventus’ 9 years of Italian Dominance and only Cristiano Ronaldo has more (29).

3) N’Golo Kante (Chelsea / France)

Kante, a man who doesn’t score nor assist but can influence the outcome of a whole game. He did exactly that again this season and guid Chelsea to a Champions league trophy with a Man of the Match display.

Before the European Championship, he alongside Lewandowski were the only two in strong contention for the award.

2) Robert Lewandowski (Bayern Munich / Poland)

Lewandowski should have been a Ballon D’or winner as we speak now had it not been the intervention of the fast spreading Corona Virus that led to the cancellation of the award Last year.

That did not however stopped him from another magnificent season with Bayern winning the Bundesliga and scoring a record breaking 41 goals in the process.

Before the International competitions, there is no debate for the Ballon D’or favorite and that’s no other person than the Polish goal poacher but his side’s disappointing display at the Euro is likely to be a deciding factor and the reason he is 2nd on the list here.

1) Lionel Messi (FC Barcelona / Argentina)

The wait is over and Finally Lionel Messi has won the much needed International trophy scoring four goals to win Top scorer of the 2021 Copa America tournament alongside Best Player of the tournament.

In a struggling Barcelona season, Messi still managed 30 goals in La Liga and he is likely to add another Ballon D’or to his already packed cabinet.
