Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has transferred nearly $8 billion to his former wife Melinda Gates, five years after their divorce.
The payment was made to Pivotal Philanthropies, Melindaโs personal foundation.

The New York Times reports that Gates donated $7.88 billion as part of their divorce settlement. The couple ended their 27-year marriage in 2021.
At the time, they said the split was amicable and that they would continue working together on philanthropy. However, that partnership officially ended in May 2024.

Melinda resigned from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which they had co-run for more than two decades.
After stepping down, she announced plans to expand Pivotal Philanthropies into a major global charity.

She reportedly encouraged Gates to donate $12.5 billion toward the new foundation. The $7.88 billion transfer is believed to be the largest single donation he has made to her organisation.
Pivotal Philanthropies focuses on womenโs rights, gender equality, family health, and social justice.

Bill Gates is currently worth an estimated $130 billion.
The Gates Foundation remains one of the largest charitable organisations in the world. It has spent more than $75 billion on global health, education, and poverty programmes.
