Former Spain head coach Roberto Moreno is believed to have been sacked from his latest job after an unusual reliance on the AI program ChatGPT.

Moreno, 48, took charge of FC Sochi in Russia in 2023. His first season ended in disappointment as Sochi were relegated from the Russian Premier League.

During the club’s 2024–25 campaign in the First League, officials began to notice a shift in Moreno’s methods.

According to former sporting director Andrei Orlov, Moreno increasingly used ChatGPT to plan training, travel and match preparation.

Orlov told Russian outlet Sports Russia that one of the more bizarre incidents occurred on a trip to FC SKA-Khabarovsk last March.

He claimed Moreno had “entered all the trip parameters into ChatGPT” to create a travel and training schedule.

The output, Orlov alleged, advised the squad to go without sleep for 28 hours as part of preparation.

“When we were preparing for the trip to Khabarovsk,” Robert said, via A Bola: “I have everything planned. I’ve entered all the trip parameters into ChatGPT,” Orlov claimed.

“That was just one of the things that showed he was ignoring common sense,” Orlov said.

Club officials grew concerned that Moreno was favoring AI instructions over practical coaching judgment.
