Court Grants Wontumi Gh¢15 Million Bail, Places Him On a Stop List, A-G Files New Criminal Charges Against Wontumi and Akonta Mining.

The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, Benard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, has been granted bail of 15 million Ghana Cedis with three sureties and other conditions by the Accra High Court.

Wontumi has been in the news for many reasons, but the popular one is about mining illegally in forest reserves.

On several occasions, Wontumi’s Akonta mining was allegedly engaging in the felling of trees in national forest reserves in search of gold without a license, but no one was able to prove with evidence until today, October 7, 2025.

Benard Atwi Boasiako was at the Criminal Investigational Department Headquarters in Accra on October 6, 2025, with his Lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi. After the brief meeting, the CID, the lawyer, and his client disclosed they would be in court the next day for some suits against them, and that eventually happened today.

The High Court granted Wontumi a Bail of ¢15 Million Ghana Cedis with three sureties, and two must possess a landed property worth 15 Million Cedis. He will have to report and sign in a book with the investigator on the first and last Monday of every month, which he dare not flout, regardless of his condition.
The 3 Surities of Wontumi have produced a photocopy of their Ghana Card, the address of their residence, and their signature.

The Party Chairman has been placed on a Stop List, which bars him from traveling outside Ghana because he must submit all his passports to the Registry.

He has to meet all the Bail Conditions above before he can go home but unfortunately, Wontumi was re-arrested after the Attorney General, Honorable Dominic Ayine, slapped with coutunt such as

  • Akonta Mining’s involvement in mining in the Tano Nimire Forest Reserve in 2022 (Three counts)
  • Erecting Buildings in Forest Reserves without written Authority (Two Counts)
  • Felling of Trees without written Authority (Two Counts)

This illegality reportedly led 4o excavators to destroy 13 hectares of land.
