Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Ofori-Atta, once declared a “fugitive”, walks freely in Washington, DC, USA after OSP failed to bring him back.

The Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta (2017-2024) who was once declared wanted by the office of the Special Prosecutor, led by Kissi Agyebeng, is now walking freely, raising concerns about the 2 being in bed.

Ken Ofori Atta was declared wanted by the the Economic and Organised Crime Office, EOCO, in collaboration with the OSP for the following charges: Strategic Mobilization Ghana contracts, ECG and BXC, National Cathedral procurement, the ambulance deal, suspicious tax refund disbursements, and the Agyapa royalties deal.

Ghanaians who believe in accountability fell in love with the Operation Recover All Loot, ORAL, launched by President Mahama’s second administration to go after former government appointees who dipped their hands into the national purse, and among the numerous candidates was Ofori Atta.

On February 10, 2025, the office of the Special Prosecutor declared the former finance minister ,”fugitive” and he was on red notice of interpol but he reached and agreement with the OSP to appear in person wihtout any arrest so after 8 days, he was no more a wanted person in May but was re-declared wanted after he failed in come to Ghana in June.

According to the former state minister’s family, he’s unfit to travel to Ghana, so he wanted the process to be virtual, but it didn’t sit well with the OSP.

After this back and forth, it’s been a long time since Ghanaians heard about Ofori Atta’s Prosecution, and this has raised concerns about the inability of the ORAL and OSP to prosecute people who have caused financial loss to the state, but they’re always publishing unnecessary updates instead of showing some action as they promised.

In September 2025, three months and some days after Mr. Ofori Atta failed to return to Ghana, there has been no action to hold him accountable. However, he was subsequently captured walking with his wife in Washington, DC, USA.

Many Ghanaians see Ken Ofori-Atta as the worst Finance Minister Ghana has ever had after he put the country in economic crisis and imposed taxes like Betting Tax and Electronic Levy on Mobile Transactions.

Over 88 members of Parliament from his party, the New Patriotic Party, protested for his removal on October 25, 2022, due to his poor performance.

According to law-inclined people, the OSP and ORAL have no valid case against the former minister, and that’s why he’s still roaming freely in the US.

One of the reasons why John Mahama won the 2024 Elections overwhelmingly was his promise to go after former government appointees who embezzled funds and caused financial loss to the state, but it seems he’s failing to do so
