According to Sana, the plot was orchestrated by former interim president Paul-Henri Damiba, whom Captain Traoré overthrew in a military coup in September 2022.

The minister alleged that the plan was financed from neighbouring Ivory Coast, claiming the objective was to create chaos and weaken the current military leadership.
