Ibrahim Traore tells Burkina Faso to forget about democracy

Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the military ruler of Burkina Faso, has openly declared that the country should “forget about democracy,”

According to him, democracy is unsuitable for the nation and even claiming that “democracy kills.”

In a televised interview aired on state broadcaster RTB on Thursday (April 2 or 3, 2026), Traoré stated:

“People need to forget about the issue of democracy. Democracy is not for us.”

He added that Burkina Faso is currently in a “revolution,” not a democracy, and criticised Western-style democratic systems.

He cited Libya as an example where attempts to impose democracy led to bloodshed and chaos.

Traoré argued that democracy has failed to deliver security or development for Burkina Faso amid its ongoing fight against Islamist insurgencies.

He argues that holding elections now would be irresponsible until the country is sufficiently secure.

Traoré seized power in a September 2022 coup, overthrowing a previous junta that had itself taken control in January 2022.

He initially promised a swift transition back to civilian rule and elections.

In May 2024, the junta extended the transition period by five years, pushing any potential elections to 2029.

In January 2026, the government formally dissolved all political parties. He also dissolved the Independent National Electoral Commission and transferred electoral responsibilities to the Ministry of Territorial Administration.
