Meet the woman who destroyed her sight to fulfill her lifelong dream of being blind

Transabled people are individuals who were not born with a disability but force themselves to be disabled as a result of their identity.

These people go to extreme ends to attain their various identities which they believe they should have been born with.

A transabled woman turned herself blind because she felt she should have been born blind instead.

Jewel Shuping says she wanted to be blind ever since she turned 6.At the age of 21, Jewel decided it was time to bring her dream to life.

Initially, she would spend hours staring at the sun in the hope of destroying her sight but nothing happened.

In 2006, Jewel got in contact with Dr. Michael First, a psychiatrist who decided to help her become blind after years of trying.

They traveled to an undisclosed city (some reports suggest Chicago) where, using numbing drops and drain cleaner, her vision was permanently destroyed.

After the process, they visited multiple hospitals to ensure she had permanently damaged her sight and was legally blind.

“I went blind on purpose, but I don’t feel it was a choice. I never liked seeing my own reflection,” Shuping told People during an interview in 2015.

Although she has been neglected by her family since then, Jewel claims she’s the happiest she’s ever been.
