According to a short documentary and accounts shared online, Nzamwita’s fear developed in his teenage years.

Callixte is reportedly suffering from a condition medically known as gynophobia. Gynophobia is an intense, irrational fear of women.

At just 16 years old, he took drastic steps to avoid contact with women: he built a tall fence — reportedly around 15 feet high — around the small yard of his home.

It is reported that this action was to cut off all regular social contact to prevent panic and anxiety whenever women were nearby.

Since then, he has lived in self-imposed isolation. His home reportedly combines basic spaces — a bedroom, kitchen and toilet — into one modest structure, and he has remained inside or within his fenced compound for decades.

Local neighbors have reportedly supported him by leaving food and water at a distance, because Nzamwita refuses to let women approach or interact with him directly.

In some telling online accounts, women delivering supplies stay outside his fence specifically to respect his phobia.

His story has drawn attention online as an unusual and striking example of how severe untreated mental health issues can isolate a person from society for decades.
