A stowaway was found dead Sunday morning in the landing gear of an American Airlines flight that had arrived from Europe, police said.

The flight had arrived in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Europe, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
Maintenance crews were working on the aircraft at Charlotte Douglas International Airport when they found the body around 9 a.m.

Airport division officers responded and pronounced the individual dead at the scene.
Authorities explained that stowaways hiding in landing gear compartments face extreme conditions.

They face adversities like low temperatures (as low as minus 60 degrees Fahrenheit) and a severe lack of oxygen at cruising altitudes of 35,000 feet or higher.
These conditions can lead to extensive frostbite, loss of limbs, or even brain death due to oxygen deprivation.

The identity of the stowaway has not been released, and the investigation is ongoing. American Airlines has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
