Stranded astronauts’ capsule is home without them

Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which took two astronauts, Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, to space is back to Earth without them.

Unfortunately, the astronauts were not able to join the spacecraft and are thus waiting behind on the International Space Station.

An earlier report from BBC reveals that the two astronauts, are going to be stuck in space until February 2025 when they will be picked in SpaceX Crew Dragon.

These astronauts were sent to space on 5 June, 2024 and they were expected to return that same month but unfortunately, they encountered a technical problem with their capsule.

It was revealed that the technical issue had to do with the “new Boeing Starliner capsule” that was supposed to bring them back to earth, which has now caused them to extend their stay to almost a year.

NASA explained that the Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, “experienced leaks of helium, which pushes fuel into the propulsion system, and several of its thrusters did not work properly.”

“Engineers at Boeing and Nasa spent months trying to understand these technical issues, but in late August the US space agency decided that Starliner was not safe enough to bring the astronauts home.”
