Before his arrest over the weekend, Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, held a high-level meeting with a Chinese delegation.
The meeting took place in the Venezuelan capital shortly before the U.S. military operation that led to his capture and removal from office.

According to video and official statements from Maduro’s social media accounts, Maduro met with Qiu Xiaoqi, a senior Chinese envoy for Latin American affairs,
The meeting occurred at the Miraflores Presidential Palace hours before U.S. forces struck Venezuelan targets early on 3 January 2026.

Maduro had described the encounter as reaffirming the strategic partnership between Beijing and Caracas.
After the operation, which U.S. officials described as a coordinated mission involving significant air and ground assets, China’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the U.S. action.

As stated by several other countries, they called it a violation of international law and Venezuela’s sovereignty.
In public statements, Beijing called for the immediate release of Maduro and his wife and urged Washington to resolve disputes through diplomacy rather than force.

China also said it cannot accept any nation acting as the “world’s judge” and emphasised respect for sovereign equality.
