Invasion of nature, such as waters and forests in search of gold, illegal mining, widely known as Galamsey in Ghana, has been a headache for decades and has worsened over time.
The Regional Minister for Ashanti Region, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, was present at the International Mayor’s Forum in China to represent Ghana.
He shared what he has noticed in China at the forum and described the country’s current state.
The Minister said he realized that the rivers in China are very clean, no entity is destroying their rivers and forests to mine, but unfortunately, some Chinese nationals are in Ghana, felling trees and illegally destroying aquatic habitats for minerals, which is unfair to residents around mining areas.
He cited that China has motivated him to fight ruthlessly against all illegal activities in his region and also jealously protect the forest reserves like China is doing.
According to Dr. Frank, Ghana is open to investors who are ready to mine legally, but illegality will not be tolerated.
He also stated that Miners are in Australia through Newmont and South Africa through Anglogold, but they all have zero environmental issues, and that is what he wants for his country.
Politicians and Traditional rulers have been fingered in illegal mining on numerous occasions. The matter is squashed by the powers that be, which is why the illegality has thrived for decades.
This speech from the Minister has sparked reactions about how Ghana is still not independent because no country will have to sit down with investors to discuss how to keep the environment, but establish rigid laws to protect nature for the future generations.

Both past and present governments have made efforts to combat Galamsey, but these efforts have evidently been insufficient due to conflicts of interest.
