Mahama will not retract his “do or die” comment, it has come to stay; Sammy Gyamfi fires

I’ve struggled to comment about John Mahama’s Do or Die comment, and that’s because I’m disappointed in the fact that our politicians never learn lessons from previous events. The scenario that played out with the infamous All die be die comment and the bogus explanations that were given then are repeating themselves this time on the other side.

Sadly, a man who is comparatively viewed as more Tolerant and Peaceful, is the one spewing such words, and it doesn’t do him any good if he truly hopes to contest for the presidency again. You can play all the politics and defend it; but Mr. Mahama got this totally wrong especially for someone who’s a Communicator.

It doesn’t matter the spin or explanations for this comment, it doesn’t change what people make of it, and how bad it is. Simple.

“The phrase [Do or Die] is an idiomatic expression in the English Language. Those who dropped out of school do not understand idiomatic expressions. Do or die means a critical assignment you have and you must do the needful or perish. And so, you must do the needful,” Mr Mahama said on Sunyani based Moonlite FM on Wednesday. My ‘do or die’ comment is an idiomatic expression; there’s nothing to retract.

Reacting to what his boss said, the director of communications for the National Democratic Congress, Sammy Gyamfi posited that the his boss will not retract the statement today, or tomorrow or the day after.  On Metro TVs morning show dubbed “Good Morning Ghana.”

He posits ” Here President Mahama is not saying go and engage in violence or lawlessness, he even said that he would not engage in cheating so nobody will cheat us. So unless the NPP intends to steal the elections in 2024, unless they want to do the wrong things at the polling stations, unless they resort to intimidation, lawlessness and violence which led to the death.of 8 Ghanaians in the just ended 2020 elections, unless they want to repeat that again, we don’t think there should be any issues.”
