Official: Messi dump Barcelona after failing to reach an agreement with the club over a new contract

Spanish Giants FC Barcelona has confirmed that Star player Lionel Messi will not continue his career with them after both parties failed to reach an agreement over a new contract.

Messi is currently out of contract after running down his contract and the Catalunya side were hopeful they will find a solution to their financial problems and tie the Argentine to a new deal when he returns from his holiday.

That agreement was said to have been met when the news broke out weeks ago that their captain has agreed a 50 percent pay cut to sign a five year contract extension with the club he began his career with.

In a club statement released few minutes ago, Barcelona revealed the player will be leaving the club despite earlier agreement and his clear intention to continue playing for them.

“Despite FC Barcelona and Lionel Messi having reached an agreement and the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, this cannot happen because of financial and structural obstacles (Spanish Liga regulations).”

“As a result of this situation, Messi shall not be staying on at FC Barcelona. Both parties deeply regret that the wishes of the player and the club will ultimately not be fulfilled.”

FC Barcelona wholeheartedly expresses its gratitude to the player for his contribution to the aggrandisement of the club and wishes him all the very best for the future in his personal and professional life.” A club statement reads.
