Chaos At University Of Ghana Speaker Elections As EC And SRC Secretary Disagree On Elections Process

The events of January 7th 2021 in the Parliament of Ghana has repeated itself at the University of Ghana during the Election of a Speaker for the SRC General Assembly.

The Elections was cancelled after a misunderstanding between the Electoral Commissioner and the SRC secretary degenerated into the snatching and destruction of elections materials and exchange of fisticuffs between some persons as well as the throwing of plastics chairs at people.

According to the Electoral Commissioner for the University of Ghana students Body, Mudassir-Ibn Ibrahim, the SRC secretary tried to usurp the powers of the Electoral Commission by asking that she endorses the ballot papers before they are used for voting, which doesn’t fall under her mandate.

In view of that, the EC reminded the secretary that they are the only body, mandated by the laws of the university to conduct elections.

The EC chairperson indicated that the SRC secretary, gave herself non-existent powers and called for votes on some amendments at the General Assembly and communicated that she will constitute her own election management team to conduct the elections.

The EC chair, hence called off the Elections and decided to exit the Mensah Sabah Hall where the election was supposed to happen.

However, he was prevented my some persons and assaulted.

He has therefore officially reported the issue to the Dean of Students Affairs and has proposed some remedies for the whole situation.
